Redfish Action Continues

Report Date: April 14, 2005

Greetings from the Lowcountry. Well it's April, and that means that March is finally over. Although the Reds were eating good for the first part of the month, man did they ever slow down. We have worked schools of Reds lately that two weeks ago would've eaten a bare hook, and now they seem reluctant to even take a bait. The majority of the fish we've caught lately have been on live and cut bait, and the select few have fallen victim to the infamous artificial. Norton's sand eel in the white/chartreuse has been the ticket for the artificials, and we've also taken a few on the Berkley gulps as well. Typical for this time of year with the Redfish. One day they're hot, the next they're not. What can you say?

On a bit of a different note, the bottom fishing in the sound has been pretty good when the weather would let us out. We've had pretty consistent action with the Black Sea Bass, and Black Drum, and have even gotten some pretty good action on the Weakfish as well. It shouldn't be long before the Cobia show up in full force and with them will come the armada of boats. This is really a special time for us here in the Lowcountry. As we gather at the local sandbars and bridges to drown baits with our good friends from near and far, we wait anxiously for the big bite.. Seriously, the Cobia fishing in the Broad River is no doubt world renowned and produces some monster fish by any standard. On calm days look to sight fish for them as they cruise on the surface. Great sport on spinning tackle and fly.

The Redfish action should continue to improve inshore as the flats fill with bait and the fish really get back to eating. The Trout should move in with the warmer water as well as Flounder, Blues, Jacks, and Ladies.

See ya soon,
Captain Josh
