Cobia and Tarpon on the move
Report Date: July 3, 2005
Report Date: July 1, 2005
Well the last few weeks have provided a wide variety of action for us both of the beaches and in the river. I've been on the hunt for the elusive Tarpon for the last week or two and have only managed to put three in the air amid the ever present Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks. But today my guide buddy Captain Mike managed to send two of them flying and boated one guestimated at 135lbs. The fish are definately starting to move into the sound and the bait has finally followed. It will only get better.
On the Cobia front, we have still been picking up a few stragglers as they make their way out to the ocean. Primarily males in the 25-30lb range. Here is a shot of one Mr. Pearson snagged on a Wild Eye Swim Shad the other day that was close to 60lbs. Mr Gregory Leng landed this 65lber on a live eel after about a thirty minute fight
. We should see these fish remain around until the end of the month as the Tarpon get thicker.
On the side we have been seeing and catching a bunch of big spanish macks in the river and around some of the near-shore wrecks. This can be fast and action packed and really fun on light tackle. We are still getting a few reds and trout and it should continue to improve as the shrimp grow larger. Till next time.
