Spring in the Lowcountry

Report Date: March 28, 2006

Well it's supposed to be anyway, at least that's what the weather man says. We have all been doing our fair share of battling the wind for the last few months. The Reds on the flats have been schooled up nicely but the wind and overcast skies have made sight fishing tough. On good weather days we have been doing really well. Gulp baits have been the only way to go for me and most of the time we have been locating the schools of fish and hanging tight and putting some baits out and letting the fish come to them. They seem to be eating these baits more based on the scent than the action. Calm days on the flats have required some finness fishing and sizing down all the lures to avoid spooking the schools. Most of the fish have been in the 4-9lb range with some spots holding fish up to 15lbs.

In the next few weeks we will start to fish for Cobia. When the water gets to near seventy degrees, the fish will move into the river where they are prime targets for light tackle as well as fly fisherman. Most of these guys average 40+lbs and we got them over ninety last year. So come on down, or up, or over and get yourself a peice of the action!
