Cobia Action

Report Date: May 10, 2005

Greetings from the Lowcountry!

Well it's about time things started to shape up around here. The last couple of weeks have been difficult to say the least. With all of this cold weather and rain and wind we have really been struggling. By now we should be in full swing with the Cobia run and also getting some pretty good action from the Redfish, but that hasn't exactly been the case. I started the season of pretty good with a nice fish on the first Cobia trip of the year, but you know how that goes. Kinda like catching a fish on the first cast of the day, NOT GOOD! We struggled for two weeks to get another Cobia to the boat and finally the proverbial gates opened.

Here is a shot of Brad from Key West holding a nice 35lb cobia taken on squid at the rip. We finished the day with another nice fish that was pushing 50lbs easy.

Day two would turn out to be much of the same. Light winds and a falling tide gave us several hours of sight fishing of which we used to bring three more fish boatside for some photo action.

Here is a nice 40lb fish that fell victim to the notorious eel and gave Mr. Ryan Brush a good fight on light tackle. His Dad followed up quickly with another fish that was pushing sixty easy. He fought that brute for about an hour until she finally gave in and allowed a few snapshots before being released.

As far as the Redfish are concerned, I don't have allot to report. A few days spent throwing the longrod yielded but a few. Somebody needs to tell these fish it's not April anymore. The bait fishing definately proved to be more efficeint and allowed us to boat seven nice fish in the 6-7lb range on the last outing. Stay tuned for some more Cobia action as the water warms and the season gets into full swing. Also, don't forget the Tarpon will be here before you know it!
