March Reds and Trout
Report Date: March 15, 2008
Springtime fishing down this way has been pretty good when you can beat the weather. With cold front after cold front, it's been alot of weather dodging and teeth chattering. After one episode of almost freezing to death, (32 degrees @ 30MPH= -4 degrees by the way) I will never under estimate the weather again.
The Reds are still in their winter patterns and are schooled up nice and tight on the flats but these days it's taking a little more encouragement to get them to eat. We have been having our best luck just "deadsticking" Gulp crabs on the bottom on the low tides. As usual You just have to slow things down when the water is cold. Another good technique for low water Reds has been fishing with cut bait. Manhaden and cut mullet have been the ticket and have definately bailed us out on some of the windier days that didn't allow for sight fishing.
Now the the water has started to warm a bit, we are picking up a few trout here and there. For the most part they have been singles but they have been good sized and an added bonus while Redfishing.
By the middle of April we should start to get some action from the Cobia in the river. Once the water gets into the mid sixties it will be game-on for the Brownies and I'll be ready and waiting.
